The Listening Chamber: Poems (Arkansas Poetry Award Series)
Published in Paperback by Univ of Arkansas Pr (April, 1997)
Author: William Aberg
Average review score:

He is my Uncle
I have to say that unfortunately while these poems are dark and a little forboding they're one sided. I'm glad the one reviewer was able to see his true light, but it is wonderful having him as an uncle. He does have his rough spots, but show me an infallible human being and them maybe I'll feel differently. Great book!

Shot with Light
I'm stunned that this fascinating book of poems-- several of which are about prison--isn't selling better. Aberg writes in such an understated manner about the solitude of prison life and drug addiction that these poems ARE truly shocking. And, yet, like James Schuyler, he's a full blown romantic in love with the world. While the subject matter may be dark, the poems sparkle in the mind with light. Aberg has learned to paint what he knows in a few deft strokes. You want a good book of poetry to teach in your MFA classes? Order this book.

Milestones 1 and 2: Milestones 1, the Music and Times of Miles Davis to 1960/Milestones 2, the Music and Times of Miles Davis Since 1960

Let's hope this title is updated soon!
This exceptional book on Miles is THE one to read if you want to know about the man and his music. All jazz biographies should be like that. I'm surprised to see it out-of-stock. Hopefully, it's because Mr Chambers is working on an updated version.

This book is indispensible to any Miles Davis fan.
For anyone who enjoys the work of Miles Davis, this book is an indispensible resource. Chambers' track-by-track analysis of each session invariable has me digging out all of my Miles Davis CDs. I am astounded that this book is out of print; I would think that it would have been popular among Miles Davis fans for years to come (and I was hoping that a later edition would cover the last five years of Miles' life). My copy of this book is dog-eared and losing pages; I would certainly buy another copy if it were available.

Average review score:

The Soul of Napa Valley
So many books attempt to capture the essence of Napa Valley. This book stands out from the rest, with a remarkable combination of photographs and words that convey the soul of the Napa Valley. If you were to choose only one introduction to Napa, this would be your best choice.

The TRUE Napa Valley
We have lived in this valley for 6 years, and buy books for our guests to familiarize themselves with the valley before they go exploring. We were pleasantly surprised to find this book as a stand-out from the crowd. The photographs by Nancy Kerby are beautiful, and the writing by Tony Kilgalin is both entertaining and enlightening. If we didn't live here, this book would tempt us to move here! We recommend this book for your library or for your new home in Napa. Enjoy!

Especially for people new in production industry this book is useful for a first introduction in the jargon used and the problems encountered.

Piano Concertos Nos. 2 and 4 in Full Score
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (November, 1995)
Author: Camille Saint-Saens
Average review score:

Indispensible scores
I found that the edition of these two masterpieces of the piano concerto literature absolutely indispensible. Saint-Saens was such a master, and his subtle, elegant and powerful writing for piano and the orchestra leaps off the printed score. We need to have the other piano concerti (1, 3 and 5) printed with the same care, and all of his other concerti, particuarly those for cello and violin needs to be treated with the same consideration. An excellent publication that every music lover should have!

Saint Saens Better Known Piano Concertos
I thought that this book was excellent. I found that the edition was very much as Saint Saens intended and I beleive that it was enlightening and informative. The staves were easy to read and the piano part especially was clear. As far as the actual music goes, it is devine. Saint Saens is a personal favorite and owning this score has been a delight. I recommend this book to any appreciator of music and most definately any pianist.

The Quilt Maniac's Playbook / Fuel for the Quilt Imagination
Published in Paperback by Tiger Lily Press (May, 2001)
Author: Nicole C. Chambers
Average review score:

Quilt Maniac's Playbook is not just another quilting book!
The Quilt Maniac's Playbook, Fuel for the Quilt Imagination by Nicole Chambers not just another quilting book.

Before reading the author's biographical information, it was clear that this book was written by a polished, professional writer with an imaginative use of language that makes her book a pleasure to read. Glancing at the first few color plates of her quilts, it is just as obvious that she is a meticulous quilter with a well-developed flair for color and design. All but three of the striking quilts in the chapter, Quilt Gallery, are designed and made by Nicole herself-a testament of her dedication to her own book.

Color is Only the Beginning presents thorough, easy to understand color fundamentals. Other teachers of color and design like me will find it refreshing in its approach. "Value is the Big Kahuna, the Big Cheese, the Big Daddy when it comes to color and design," the author declares. "How you use value will have a significant effect on how the colors will interact with one another." "...it's not surprising to find that contrast and unity are the central components of good design and the heart and soul of making good color choices," Nicole adds then proceeds to explain and illustrate these positions.

Color Inspiration
This is a wonderful book full of inspiration for color selection written in a humorous easy-to-follow text. When you're done reading this you want to rush to the quilt shop and have fun choosing colors for the fabulous quilts in this book.

Quinceanera Means Sweet Fifteen
Published in Hardcover by Hyperion Press (March, 2001)
Author: Veronica Chambers
Average review score:

I read it in one day!
Marisol is back from Panama. Magda and her are getting redy for their Sweet Fifteen. The door into womanhood for Latina girls. Marisol's mom,Inez, can't afford a quince. But Marisol dreams about it everyday. While this is going on Marisol's mom has a new boyfriend, which Marisol finds goofy. Another problem is about Magda hanging out with Marisa and Elizabeth(snobs) who make her shoplift. As all of this drama is going on Francisco, a juinor, talks to her after Spanish class. They make a date where she learns more about him. He's Panamanian and he doesn't know his father. At the end she gets her Quinceanera that she's been hoping for.(With Francisco as her date.) Marisol still talks about her memories in Panama and in Nueva York. Like she talks about Ruben and Ana.(Ruben her novio and Ana her amiga in the first book. This book was great. I recommend it to all girls!

Fabulous book that I wish I had when I was 15!
I try to read books that I give my goddaughter beforehand to make sure the story is worth the read and not too racy. This is the second book in the Marisol and Magdalena series, and I read it with as much fevor as the first one. I wished it was around when I was fourteen, figuring out if I wanted a quince or not! But besides the quincenera issue, the issue of growing pains between best childhood friends is very real and beleivable. Highly recommend for girls in the age range of 10-14, especially if they are hispanic (even moreso if they are Panamanian;-) ). Any adult that reads this will go right back to those uncertain days of teenagedom.

Seeds of Love: For Brothers and Sisters of International Adoption
Published in Hardcover by Folio One Pub (May, 1997)
Authors: Mary Ebejer Petertyl and Jill Chambers
Average review score:

Excellent preparation for kids whose parents travel to adopt
This is the first book our 22-month-old child ever asked me to read by name! My husband and I leave tomorrow for St. Petersburg, Russia to adopt our second child, and "Seeds of Love" has helped immeasurably to help us prepare our son for our absence and to help him anticipate being a big brother to his new baby sister. The book gently raises and answers many of the questions and concerns a child would have when anticipating being separated from his/her parents for an extended period of time. A must for brothers and sisters of international adoption!

An adoptive parent sees great potential in this book.
Ten years ago we adopted an infant girl from Korea. Her brother was 30 months old the day they met. For years our favorite adoption book was "Katie-Bo". This was very much the story of our adoption as known by our son and his preschool age cousins. SEEDS OF LOVE is a very similar book for any preschooler who will gain a sibling through adoption travel rather than airport meetings. The story told in SEEDS OF LOVE is one of happiness, sadness, confusion, and love. All of these emotions go with the process of adoption and with the process of having parents leave home. This book is important because it provides a clear story with a message of love for all children in a family. With small variations, this is the story of adoption as known by many preschool age siblings.

Solo Parenting: Raising Strong and Happy Families

A positive guide that has something for everyone.
Even if you have already been though a divorce, it is never to late to read this book. This insightful, personal guide shines a ray of hope on every situation, and shows you how you can do what is best for you and your child. The author brings true stories to us, including her own, in a wide array.

Rules of Flying Solo
When cabin pressure drops, there's a good reason airline passengers are asked to secure their own oxygen masks first before helping others. If they didn't, they wouldn't be much good to the gasping child or elderly person in the next seat. Such is the philosophy behind author Diane Chambers' new book Solo Parenting: Raising Strong and Happy Families (Fairview Press, $12.95), a step-by-step guide to help readers deal with the turbulence and pressure changes of parenting alone. According to Chambers, a former single parent and self-proclaimed cabin pressure expert, taking care of personal needs first is the key to successful single parenting. "Too often I hear the words, 'If only I could find a partner -- someone to help me with all these responsibilities -- life would be better.' But many times, that attitude is what got them there in the first place. So, I try to get parents to look at their singleness in a new light and to view it as a rich existence, not something to loathe or be ashamed of. Then, once they've addressed their own needs, and begin developing themselves, it's amazing how adamant they become about not needing anyone else to complete their lives. At that point, they're personally prepared to be the best parents they can be." WHEN THE PILOT TURNS ON THE SEATBELT SIGN. The book idea was conceived when Chambers found herself struggling to deal with all the initial problems single parents face. As a result, she was forced to prioritize and break challenges down into manageable parts. "There were a number of issues I had to resolve in a very short period of time: overcome the pain and trauma of divorce, re-budget my financial picture, redirect my career, become a part-time lawyer, a full-time father-figure, and find time somewhere in between to pay attention to what my kids were doing and thinking. That's a lot to face all at once. I didn't have any warning -- before I knew it I was fastening my seat belt for a long and uncertain journey. I was determined to be successful and fight the statistics that said my kids would suffer because they were living with only one parent. So, I just started taking it a step at a time." In the book, Chambers breaks down the process into three parts: preparation, self-development, and child-development. The first section addresses the emotional restructuring that is often necessary following divorce, death, or unwanted pregnancy. She uses the concepts of overcoming fear, reframing, and turning negative energy into positive steps, to help single parents prepare and approach the journey ahead with a healthy view of their new role. SEAT CUSHION AS A FLOTATION DEVICE Secondly, she focuses on innovative ways to tackle practical issues that are common to single parents: career, money, and self-esteem. Here, Chambers gives parents numerous ideas and suggestions on how to improve their lifestyles, while also keeping balance in eight critical areas of life, which include physical and spiritual needs. "Just keeping their heads above water is sometimes all single parents have time to think about," says Chambers. "But they have to figure out how to get out of the water and make permanent changes in these practical areas. Otherwise, they'll end up spending the duration of their children's lives trying to figure out what's wrong with them instead of focusing on their children's needs. Something as simple as not exercising or eating the right foods can potentially compromise a parent's ability to be all she needs to be for her children." HELP FROM A BREATHING PARENT Assuming that readers have followed the book's step-by-step boxes and chapter-end checkpoints, Chambers finally challenges them to go the extra mile and develop a customized parenting plan based on their particular strengths and weaknesses. A pyramid of values is employed to illustrate the basics of a successful plan, which allows readers the freedom to conceive their own rules and consequences based on the model. The last two chapters discuss how parents might fight the statistics going against them by thinking ahead and preparing for a child's future welfare and ultimate success. Daycare, child support, estate planning, and tips for daily living make up the final analysis in child development. "Parental love is a really powerful force behind good parenting skills," says Chambers. "Most people already have what they need to make it work, they just need a general flightplan -- so to speak. Once they have a basic outline, they really don't need an expert to give them day-to-day advice. Besides, we all know that parenting is a trial-and-error kind of thing -- no one has the perfect plan because every kid requires a custom fit." QUALIFYING TO SIT NEAR THE EXIT ROW DOOR In a nutshell, Solo Parenting focuses on the concept that parental example, in word and action, will ultimately have a great effect on children. Chambers contends that it's up to each parent to decide whether or not it will be a positive or negative effect. "The number of adults in a household should not be a determinant of a child's future success," says Chambers. "It ultimately comes down to the parents' level of commitment to positive change and their willingness to be and live what they expect their children to become. It takes a lot of courage, but it's well worth the effort."
